The Lagos State Government has announced its intention to strictly enforce penalties against illegal dumping of refuse and littering across the state. Residents have been warned that offenders could face a three-month jail term or a fine of ₦250,000.

This was disclosed by the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a post on his X handle on Wednesday, June 4.

During a media briefing held yesterday by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, officials reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations.

“We made it clear that Lagos will no longer tolerate deliberate environmental abuse,” said Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources.

Starting July 1, the state will begin full enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics. Offenders who illegally dump refuse, litter the streets, or deface the environment will face stiff penalties — including fines of up to ₦250,000 or up to three months in jail.

Wahab revealed that over 3,000 offenders have already been arrested, warning that anyone caught engaging in environmental offenses will be prosecuted in accordance with the state’s sanitation and environmental laws.

He also emphasized that the laws banning cart pushers and public defecation remain in effect, and stated clearly that illegal street trading will not be tolerated.

As the Sallah celebration approaches, Wahab urged Lagos residents to celebrate responsibly and keep their surroundings clean. He stressed the importance of proper waste disposal practices across the metropolis.

“Bag your waste properly, don’t dump refuse in drains or on road medians, and ensure it is handed over to your assigned PSP (Private Sector Participation) operator,” he advised.
