The family of Nigerian football legend Christian Chukwu has announced a new date for his burial. The ceremony will now be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

Initially, the burial was scheduled for August 22, 2025, in Enugu. However, a statement signed by Emeka Christian Chukwu Jr. revealed that the change became necessary due to a scheduling conflict with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Conference, which will take place in Enugu from August 22 to 28, 2025.

The statement reads:

“We most respectfully wish to inform you of the slight change in the burial date of Chairman Christian Chukwu, previously scheduled for August 22, 2025. The new date is now Saturday, August 16, 2025.
This change is necessitated by a clash with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Conference scheduled for August 22–28, 2025, being hosted by the Enugu State Government.
Please kindly accept our apologies for any inconvenience this change may cause.”

Christian Chukwu, a former captain of the Green Eagles (now Super Eagles), was a revered figure in Nigerian football. He spent his club career with Enugu Rangers and earned 54 international caps, scoring five goals for Nigeria.

He led the Green Eagles to AFCON glory in 1980 on home soil and later served as assistant coach to Clemens Westerhof during Nigeria’s victorious 1994 AFCON campaign in Tunisia. Chukwu was also instrumental in Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup qualification in 1994.

In 1985, he assisted Sebastine Brodericks as Nigeria won the FIFA JVC U-16 World Cup in China. Chukwu also led the Super Eagles as head coach during the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia, where Nigeria secured a bronze medal.
