Police officers in Delta State have arrested a woman who allegedly drugged the mother of a two-month-old baby boy with sedative-laced juice and fled with the child.
This development was announced by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olufemi Abaniwonda, during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Asaba, the state capital, on Thursday, May 15.
According to Abaniwonda, the incident occurred while the baby’s mother was on a business trip with the suspect, identified as Mrs. Joy, from Koko to Warri.
“On April 7, 2025, at about 10:00 hours, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ekpan Police Station received a complaint that a 20-year-old woman had embarked on a business trip on February 16, 2025, with one Mrs. Joy from Koko to Warri,” Abaniwonda stated.
While en route, Mrs. Joy allegedly offered the baby’s mother a juice laced with a sedative, which caused her to fall asleep. She then absconded with the two-month-old baby boy.
Following the complaint, the DPO of Ekpan Police Station initiated an intelligence-led investigation. The 49-year-old suspect was traced and subsequently arrested.
“After discreet interrogation, the suspect confessed to abducting the baby. The child, now five months old, has been rescued and reunited with his parents. The suspect remains in custody, and the investigation is ongoing,” the commissioner added.
