Ayo Makun recently revealed that he was invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding the public spraying of both local and foreign currencies, an act that has stirred considerable attention.

The comedian shared videos that captured the incident, which led to his invitation by the EFCC. In his statement, he emphasized the need for Nigerians to handle money responsibly, showing respect for both the Naira and foreign currencies at events.

He expressed his gratitude, stating: “I am thankful to God for His mercy and guidance. On Monday, I was invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in relation to an incident involving the public spraying of both local and foreign currencies—an act classified as an offense tied to the abuse of the Naira.”

Makun thanked the EFCC and all authorities involved for their understanding, noting that they granted him pardon after confirming that the money sprayed was not linked to proceeds of crime or illicit funds.

“This experience has been an important lesson for me, and I am personally committed to promoting awareness about the proper respect and care for our national currency.”

He continued, addressing his friends, family, and the public: “Spraying money at public events is a practice commonly seen in Nigerian celebrations, especially at weddings, funerals, and parties. While it’s considered a cultural tradition, it’s essential to understand the legal implications. Let me share some key dos and don’ts regarding this practice.”

Makun then emphasized that mutilating or abusing the Naira—whether by spraying, tearing, defacing, or mishandling—goes beyond cultural tradition and is a violation of Nigerian law. Such acts undermine the integrity of the currency and can have serious legal consequences.

“We must all strive to uphold the dignity of our currency, as it symbolizes the nation’s sovereignty and economic stability. Respect for the Naira is respect for Nigeria’s future,” he urged.

He concluded by calling for a collective effort to promote responsible behavior and foster a culture of patriotism and integrity: “Together, we can encourage responsible actions and build a better future for our country. Thank you.”
