Matteo Berrettini, a former top-10 player who has been grappling with injuries, has withdrawn from the Australian Open just before his highly anticipated first-round match against Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The Italian, who reached the semi-finals in 2022, cited a foot problem for his withdrawal, according to tournament organizers. The ATP Tour conveyed well wishes for Berrettini’s swift recovery, acknowledging his unfortunate exit from the Melbourne competition.
As a result of Berrettini’s withdrawal, seventh-seed Tsitsipas, last year’s finalist defeated by Novak Djokovic, will now face Belgian lucky loser Zizou Bergs in the first round.
Berrettini has been sidelined since the 2021 US Open, where he retired from his second-round match due to an ankle injury. His persistent injury struggles have unfortunately impacted his participation in the Australian Open this year.
