The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather advisory, indicating that heavy rainfall is expected in twenty-five states and the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday, September 28th and Friday, September 29th, potentially leading to flash floods.

According to NiMet’s forecast, the states anticipated to experience substantial rainfall are Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Abia.

NiMet’s predictions also encompass Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi, Kwara, Benue States, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where moderate to heavy rainfall is expected.

For the remainder of the country, the forecast suggests very light or no rainfall. In terms of infrastructure, NiMet advises that strong winds pose a threat to weak structures, trees, and masts. People in affected states are urged to disconnect electrical appliances before the onset of rainfall, rather than during.

NiMet further cautions that the expected moderate to heavy rainfall may result in flash flooding in the affected areas. Additionally, strong winds may accompany the rains, with the most potent winds anticipated over parts of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi.

The agency issues a stern warning to the public, especially drivers, not to attempt to drive through surface runoff waters, as they can contain strong undercurrents. Other potential hazards include slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility during rain, which can disrupt road traffic. NiMet underscores the importance of refraining from driving through surface water for the safety of all.
