The Spanish Football Association (FA) has initiated an internal investigation following the activation of its sexual violence protocol.

Federation President Luis Rubiales was provisionally suspended by FIFA on Saturday due to his actions stemming from an incident involving a kiss with footballer Jenni Hermoso after Spain’s World Cup victory last week.

Responding to claims from the 46-year-old Rubiales that the kiss had been consensual, the Spanish star issued a comprehensive statement on Friday denying the assertion.

In the latest update, Maria Dolores Martinez Madrona, a referee and the current protocol protection delegate, responsible for investigating and reporting findings to the Sexual Violence Advisory Committee when a complaint is lodged, has announced the commencement of a probe.

“We have activated our protocol and are currently investigating the events. We urge everyone to respect the privacy and dignity of all individuals involved,” she stated in a letter published by the federation.

“As the protection delegate for sexual violence, my duty is to uphold the protocol and ensure the privacy of those affected by this incident and of the Sexual Violence Advisory Committee.”

The fallout from Rubiales’ refusal to step down has escalated dramatically in recent days, leading to widespread resignations and boycotts within the federation.

All 23 members of Spain’s triumphant World Cup squad have collectively declared that they will not participate until the 46-year-old is removed from his position, following his stunning decision to remain in his role during an emergency assembly on Friday.

The crisis deepened on Saturday as all 11 members of Jorge Vilda’s coaching staff walked out and condemned Rubiales’ behavior.

FIFA’s ban, initially lasting for 90 days, encompasses all football-related activities and includes an injunction preventing him from contacting or attempting to contact Hermoso, either directly or indirectly.

Despite his persistent refusal to step down, Rubiales also faces a fresh investigation from the Spanish government, which has initiated legal proceedings. Victor Francos, the head of the government’s National Sports Council, likened the situation to the “MeToo movement of Spanish football.”

Francos stated, “Rubiales has aggravated the situation. The government will not stand idle.”

He continued, “The government is commencing procedures today to compel Rubiales to provide explanations before the Administrative Court of Sport (TAD), and if the TAD is willing, we will suspend Rubiales from his functions.”

A court hearing is anticipated to take place on August 28, today.
