The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a notification to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) regarding the imminent threat of flooding along the River Benue basin.

This information was conveyed in a letter bearing the signature of Umar Salisu, the Director of African Affairs at the Ministry. The letter is dated August 21.

According to the contents of the letter, the government of Cameroon has outlined its intention to “commence the release of water from the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River in the upcoming days.”

The communication further highlighted that this decision has been prompted by the substantial rainfall experienced “within the vicinity of the dam’s catchment area in Northern Cameroon.”

The communication emphasized that, “In reference to the memorandum, it’s important to highlight that when the discharge of water becomes essential, the Lagdo Dam authorities will carefully release water in controlled and incremental quantities. This approach aims to minimize and prevent potential damages that could arise from the water release, spanning across the River Benue basin in both Cameroon and Nigeria.

“In consideration of the aforementioned, we kindly request the esteemed Agency to promptly undertake all requisite proactive measures and initiatives. These actions are intended to alleviate any potential harm, while also raising awareness among the residents of these regions. Their vigilance and adherence to necessary precautions are of utmost importance.”
