The Federal Government announced that after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday evening at the State House in Abuja, the labor leaders have reached a resolution to halt any further protests.
The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, and the Trade Union Congress’ President, Festus Usifo, recently met with President Tinubu following the nationwide protest organized by the unions on Wednesday.
In a statement released shortly after the meeting, the Special Adviser to the President on Communication and Strategy, Dele Alake, announced that the labour leaders have mutually decided to conclude the strike. They expressed confidence in the President’s commitment to fostering a transparent and fair examination of all the concerns raised by the Labour Movement.
Alake emphasized that the union leaders have chosen to pursue additional avenues for constructive engagement with the government in order to address all lingering concerns impacting the welfare of the working people and the broader Nigerian populace.
According to him, President Tinubu has made a firm commitment to the labor leaders that the Port Harcourt refineries will commence production by December 2023, following the completion of the ongoing rehabilitation contract between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Italian firm, Maire Tecnimont SpA.
Furthermore, President Tinubu expressed his unwavering dedication to working in the best interest of Nigeria. He earnestly appealed to the labor leaders to collaborate with him in creating a more prosperous and economically vibrant country.
