A former Minister of Sport and Youths Development, Solomon Dalung, has expressed concern over the increasing rate of insecurity in the country.

The former minister in a video posted on his Facebook lamented that Nigeria is under the siege of criminals, calling for the government to be proactive.

He said this while reacting to the spate of killings in Plateau State.

“We are under siege by criminal elements motivated by instincts different from the narratives in the public space, we must be united to deal with the situation. This can be achieved by recognising our differences and harnessing them for peaceful coexistence,” he said.

According to him, people have a right to be angry with the government over killings.

He said, “Government has not been proactive with the management of the crisis, it seems political will copiously is missing in action which has further debited the trust deficit between the people and government.

“In all these, we cannot abandon the fact that peace is critical to human existence. Let us continue to pressure the government from all fronts to force their hands to discharge their constitutional responsibilities.

“Anger in the circumstances is justified but it must be managed properly in order to archive peaceful coexistence. We are first human beings before ethnicity and religion, therefore tailor your positive energy towards improving the fragile peace situation.

“The preferred therapy to cure bitterness and hatred is forgiveness while tolerance is the vaccine for multiculturalism. I urged government and security agencies to be more responsible in the discharge of their duties.

“Evidently, we are drifting speedily into anarchy with citizens losing their lives to the reign of criminals wreaking havoc with impunity. This must be abated earlier before self-help replaces the rule of law.

“The sanctity of human lives must not be replaced with ethnic or religious profiling. Government must be transparently accountable in governance to repossess citizens’ confidence. Enough of bloodletting and I stand strongly against the killing of innocent citizens. Let peace prevail in Plateau State.”
