The Abia State Police Command has dismissed a viral report claiming that 488 Boko Haram members were arrested in the state.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the command clarified that the circulating video is not recent. According to the police, it is an old broadcast recorded over 11 years ago and does not reflect the current situation in Abia State.

The police described the report as misleading and intended to create panic among the public. “As the lead internal security agency, the command assures residents of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging citizens to go about their lawful activities without apprehension,” the statement said.

The police also called on the public to support their efforts by avoiding fake news and relying solely on verified information. “The State Police wants the public to support its security efforts by rejecting fake news and relying only on credible and verified sources for information,” it added.

Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa warned that spreading false information could disturb public peace and security. He emphasized that anyone found guilty of sharing such content would be arrested and prosecuted under the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrime Act.

The police advised residents to remain vigilant and work together to maintain peace by rejecting misinformation.
