Anambra State High Court sitting at Ogidi in the Idemili Judicial Division, and presided over by Justice Lauretta Oyeka, has sentenced Chidubem Anawonwa to death by hanging after convicting him of murdering his 74-year-old mother, Theresa Anawonwa.
The incident occurred in Umuokokpa Aborji village, Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, on 23 April 2019. The act violated Section 271 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 36, Revised Laws of Anambra State, 1991, as amended.
In charge number HID/7C/2020, the prosecution, led by Chief State Counsel Obiageli Nwankiti and Principal State Counsel Uju Igboeli, presented evidence revealing Chidubem’s long history of violence against his mother, including physical abuse and death threats. According to the evidence, on 23 April 2019, while his young niece was locked in a room at their home, Chidubem, then aged 37, strangled his mother to death after inflicting multiple bruises on her.
Relying on testimonies from five prosecution witnesses, the court dismissed Chidubem’s claim of alibi. Represented pro bono, he was sentenced accordingly.
