As Ghanaians continue to grapple with a spike in property rents, the country’s Acting Rent Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, has said that under Ghana’s rent laws, landlords are not permitted to arbitrarily set or increase rent without approval from the Rent Control Department.
He noted that many landlords have failed to comply largely due to ignorance of the law.
“According to the rent law in Ghana, no landlord has the right to sit at will and charge whatever they want unless the Rent Control Department conducts an assessment and issues a certificate. Once that certificate of assessment has been issued, rent cannot be increased,” he said.
