A 23-year-old doctor in India has allegedly died by suicide following repeated disputes with her family over her decision to adopt a pet cat in Hyderabad’s Alwal area.
The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, March 20, 2026, when the doctor, identified as T. Princy, also known as Shreshtha, was alone at home, according to officials.
Princy lived with her mother, Kusumalatha, and her grandmother.
According to reports, she had brought a cat home a few weeks earlier but later developed symptoms of cold and cough. Her family objected to keeping the pet, leading to frequent disagreements.
On Friday evening, her mother and grandmother had stepped out. Upon their return, they reportedly found Princy hanging from a ceiling fan in her room. Neighbours were alerted, and the police were subsequently informed.
Authorities arrived at the scene and moved the body to Gandhi Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
“The mother informed us that Princy had brought home a pet cat. After that, she developed cold and cough symptoms, which led to repeated disputes between them,” said Alwal Sub-Inspector Devendra.
Police said a case of suspicious death has been registered following a complaint by the deceased’s mother.
While preliminary findings suggest the incident may be linked to a domestic dispute, officials say all possible angles are being investigated.
Princy had recently completed her medical degree and was preparing for postgraduate entrance examinations. She was also in the process of applying for her medical license.
