The Cross River Police Command has arrested a pastor’s wife, Ibiong Uyime Bassey, for allegedly assaulting her five-year-old niece with a spatula in Calabar.

The incident came to light after a viral video showed the child with a swollen eye. Reports indicate that the assault occurred after the girl, identified as Edidiong Uwem Aniefiok, took meat from a pot of soup.

The Command’s spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

“We arrested Ibiong Uyime Bassey in connection with a viral video depicting the abuse of a minor,” the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) stated.

“The suspect, a resident of Atimbo Road, was apprehended at about 10:45 a.m. by officers of A Division, Calabar, following swift action after the video surfaced online. Preliminary findings indicate that she allegedly assaulted her five-year-old niece with a spatula, causing injuries around the child’s right eye. Further examination revealed bruises on other parts of the child’s body, suggesting sustained abuse. Investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as they become available.”
