Mobile police officers in Calabar on Tuesday, March 10, sealed off a venue where the African Democratic Congress (ADC) had planned to inaugurate a membership registration, mobilisation, and revalidation committee.

The event, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at an event centre along Marian Road, was intended to kickstart preparations for the party’s upcoming primaries. The committee, led by Eko Alobo, was established to oversee membership registration and mobilisation activities across Cross River State.

Reports indicate that as early as 7:00 a.m., armed police officers cordoned off the venue, preventing party members from entering. Sources close to the security operatives said the action followed a petition submitted by some party members.

Attempts to resolve the standoff at the venue proved unsuccessful despite interventions by senior ADC figures, including the South-South Zonal Vice Chairman, Usani Uguru Usani, and Bassey Eko Ewa. The leaders reportedly held a meeting with the state Commissioner of Police in a bid to address the issue.

Following the disruption, the inauguration was relocated to the residence of Usani, where a large gathering of party supporters eventually assembled.
