British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua has made the surprising decision to leave the United Kingdom and establish residency in Dubai.

The 36-year-old athlete confirmed he will relocate to the United Arab Emirates city, despite rising tensions in the region amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran. Dubai has been among the areas targeted by Iranian strikes in retaliation for America’s earlier actions.

Joshua, a former heavyweight world champion born in Watford to Nigerian parents, represented Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics, where he won a gold medal. However, he is now departing his home nation, according to the Daily Mail.

The unexpected move was revealed in paperwork Joshua filed on Friday for his £150 million business empire, which requires him to declare his country of residence. The documents show that he proceeded with his decision even amid heightened conflict between the USA, Israel, and Iran.

In recent weeks, the UAE has faced missile and drone attacks from Iran, prompting more than 100,000 Britons to leave the country and return to the UK. Joshua’s relocation adds a high-profile example of individuals moving despite the geopolitical tensions.
