A yet-to-be-identified young man was killed by a mob on Wednesday morning, March 4, after allegedly disrupting traffic along the FMC–OSAMCA corridor of the Idi-Aba–Kemta–OGTV road in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Eyewitnesses told The Nation that the man, reportedly armed with heavy metal objects in both hands, blocked one lane of the four-lane carriageway at around 10:20 a.m., preventing motorists from passing and threatening anyone who tried to drive through. The incident caused a traffic gridlock that lasted nearly 30 minutes, leaving motorists and pedestrians stranded amid fears for their safety.
Distress calls were reportedly made to the Kemta Division of the Nigeria Police Force for intervention. Before officers arrived, however, some youths in the area confronted the man, striking him repeatedly with wooden objects.
By the time security operatives reached the scene, the man had been overpowered and was lying unconscious on the ground. Despite police presence, members of the crowd allegedly continued to assault him after he was removed from the road to ease traffic congestion.
