The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Christianah Adeyeye, has highlighted the dangers of alcohol consumption among Nigerians.

During a recent media chat, Adeyeye — who has championed the ban on the sale of sachet alcohol — outlined the health and social risks associated with excessive drinking.

She said:

“It increases the risk of depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Alcohol is an addictive substance. Our study shows that youths who begin drinking before the age of 15 are 41 percent more likely to become dependent on alcohol. The study also indicates that many of them progress to using cocaine and other narcotics.

“They become violent. Alcohol is a major factor in youth suicide, homicide, and motor vehicle crashes. Alcohol consumption is also linked to unprotected sexual activities, unwanted pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Drinking often leads to lower grades, missed classes, and impaired cognitive function.

“In our country, it is responsible for banditry.”
