At least four women have died and nine others injured in a multi-vehicle crash at Agulu Lake, along Nanka-Agulu Road in Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State.

The accident occurred around 6:18 pm on Friday, February 27, involving 19 people and four vehicles: a Toyota Hiace (Reg No: HAL676YG), a Shuttle (Reg No: UKP274YA), a trailer, and a Toyota Hilux with no registration number.

The victims were returning from a burial ceremony when the vehicle carrying them lost control while descending toward a narrow bridge and collided with three other vehicles.

A video from the scene showed bystanders expressing grief over the tragedy, while emergency responders and sympathizers worked to rescue survivors and recover the deceased.

Confirming the incident, SRC Margaret Onabe, Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, attributed the crash to excessive speed and loss of control. She said:

“A fatal road traffic crash occurred on 27th February, 2026, at Agulu Lake, Nanka-Agulu Road. The crash involved four vehicles. The probable cause was speed and loss of control. All drivers fled the scene, so there were no eyewitnesses. Observations by the FRSC rescue team from Nanka outpost indicated that the vehicle was descending the hill at high speed, lost control, and collided with three other vehicles.”

The crash involved 19 people—six male adults, ten female adults, and three male children. Nine individuals (two male adults, four female adults, and three male children) sustained injuries, while four female adults were killed. The injured were taken to St Joseph Hospital, Adazi, while the deceased were deposited at the hospital morgue. Traffic was rerouted using an alternative route.

Onabe added that Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno had expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a swift recovery. She also urged motorists to prioritize safety and drive cautiously to prevent avoidable accidents.
