The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has withdrawn from the investigation into a viral video in which a young woman, Mirabel, alleged that she was sexually assaulted.
Earlier reports indicated that in the video, Mirabel claimed an unknown man invaded her home, assaulted her with a sharp object, and forced sexual intercourse. In a follow-up video, she said she had ingested a poisonous substance and was subsequently hospitalized and revived. The videos sparked widespread reactions on social media, as Mirabel also shared that she is an orphan and experiencing suicidal thoughts. Following the public outcry, the Lagos DSVA issued a statement seeking assistance in locating her to conduct a detailed investigation aimed at apprehending the perpetrator.
In an updated statement released on February 18, the agency confirmed that it had successfully established communication with a close friend of Mirabel, who stated that she had been discharged from the hospital. The agency further clarified that the alleged incident occurred in Ogun State, which is outside its jurisdiction. The Ogun State Police Command has since begun investigating the matter.
“We sincerely appreciate members of the public who provided helpful information and tagged the Agency to ensure swift intervention,” the Lagos DSVA said.
“We have confirmed that the incident occurred in Ogun State and is therefore outside the jurisdiction of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency. In the spirit of inter-agency collaboration and survivor protection, all relevant information has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities in Ogun State.
“We understand that the Ogun State Police Command is currently handling the matter, and we trust that the survivor will fully cooperate with the appropriate authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and due process.”
