The Nigeria Police Force, through its INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, has successfully returned $23,000 to a victim of an international romance scam based in the Cayman Islands.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the repatriation followed a formal request from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. The request sought the assistance of INTERPOL NCB Abuja in investigating a Nigerian national, Achufusi Obioma Ikenna, who allegedly defrauded a Cayman Islands resident through an online romance scam.

Hundeyin explained that upon receiving the request, INTERPOL NCB Abuja launched discreet, intelligence-driven investigations, which led to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the stolen $23,000.

After completing all required documentation and working closely with international partners, the recovered funds were officially handed over to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. The transfer was facilitated through the British High Commission in Abuja and represented by Mr. Shaun McLeary, ensuring the secure return of the money to the victim.

The police spokesperson added that the suspect will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.

He noted that the successful recovery and repatriation of the funds highlights the Nigeria Police Force’s continued commitment to intelligence-led policing, strong international cooperation, and the fight against transnational cybercrime. Hundeyin emphasized that the Force remains determined to trace and recover proceeds of crime, return them to rightful owners, and ensure offenders are brought to justice in line with the law and global best practices.
