Ahead of the 2027 general election, APC chieftain Biodun Ajiboye has cast doubt on Peter Obi’s ability to replicate the level of support he received during the 2023 presidential election.

Obi, who contested against President Bola Tinubu and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar in 2023, surprised many by securing 6,101,533 votes and finishing third in the race.

In an interview with Channels TV on Monday, January 19, Ajiboye argued that Obi no longer has the political influence to command such a large following, particularly in his home region of the South East.

“The scenario of 2023 is not the scenario of today… we have 208 governors now,” Ajiboye said, highlighting the current political landscape.

When asked whether the high number of governors from the same party translates into presidential votes, he replied:

“That’s not the point. A governor’s role is to lead their state; that’s natural. The good things we have done will speak for themselves. Obi is no longer in command of the followership he once had. Look at the governors in the South East — APGA, LP, or ADC — the dynamics have changed. In the past, Obi had significant influence in the region, but today that is no longer the case.”

Ajiboye’s remarks underscore the shifting political alliances ahead of the 2027 election and suggest that the landscape Obi once dominated may be more challenging to navigate this time around.
