Despite ongoing impeachment proceedings by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has affirmed that he remains in office.
Fubara made the statement during the grand finale of the 2026 NPA Port Harcourt International Polo Tournament on Saturday, January 17. Addressing guests at the event, he said he will continue to perform his constitutional duties as governor.
Highlighting the peaceful conclusion of the week-long tournament as evidence of the state’s stability, Fubara urged residents to disregard “misleading narratives on social media.”
“What is important is that I’m here, I’m still the governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we promised the Rivers people. I’m happy you had your tournament for one week and the president boldly telling the world that there was no incident. It shows that we’re working and Rivers State is safe, and that is the most important responsibility of government. We must move on.
For me, the lives and property of everyone doing business here are the most important thing. I will not, for any reason, support directly or indirectly any act that will endanger the life of anyone,” he said.
Earlier this month, the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct. On Friday, January 16, a Port Harcourt High Court issued an interim order restraining the state’s chief judge from receiving or acting on any impeachment notice against the governor and his deputy.
Despite the court order, lawmakers have vowed to continue with the impeachment process, arguing that the judiciary has no authority to halt legislative proceedings.
