Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have vowed to proceed with the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The lawmakers made the declaration during a press briefing held before the commencement of plenary on Thursday, January 16. They accused the governor of attempting to intimidate some members of the Assembly through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Speaking in turns, the legislators insisted that the impeachment process has no ethnic undertone, stressing that their actions are strictly guided by constitutional provisions. The lawmakers, who are of Ijaw extraction, appealed to their kinsmen not to interpret the impeachment move as an attack on the Ijaw ethnic group simply because the governor is an Ijaw man.

According to them, their support for the impeachment proceedings is based on what they described as the governor’s continuous violations of the constitution, which they say warrant his removal from office.

Meanwhile, four lawmakers who had earlier called for a halt to the impeachment process during the House briefing of January 8 have now reversed their stance and are once again backing the impeachment of both the governor and his deputy.

The lawmakers are Sylvanus Nwankwo, the Minority Leader of the House and representative of Omuma State Constituency; Peter Abbey, who represents Degema State Constituency; Barile Nwakoh of Khana Constituency I; and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II. They made this known during the press conference.

Recall that last Thursday, the Rivers State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy over allegations of gross misconduct.

The process was initiated after Major Jack, leader of the Assembly, read out the allegations of gross misconduct against the governor, which were reportedly signed by 26 members of the House.
