A social media post has reignited outrage over Nigeria’s emergency response system following a video showing heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua at the scene of a fatal road accident that reportedly claimed two lives.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Esen (@SemiNigerian) criticised the apparent lack of basic emergency protocols, calling the incident a reflection of Nigeria’s weak public safety systems and poor governance. The post claims that despite the severity of the crash, there were no ambulances, trained medical personnel, or proper first aid at the scene. Instead, Joshua was reportedly made to sit upright in the front seat of a police van immediately after the accident — contrary to standard safety procedures, which recommend laying accident victims flat and stabilising them to prevent further injury. The accompanying video allegedly shows Joshua being dragged out of the vehicle involved in the crash, further fuelling public concern about how emergencies are handled.
“This is deeply troubling,” the user wrote. “It highlights how broken our emergency response and governance systems are. May Nigeria not happen to any of us.”
The incident has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the country’s inadequate accident response infrastructure, poorly trained first responders, and non-functional emergency services. Authorities have yet to release an official statement clarifying the circumstances of the accident or the response at the scene
