The Nigeria Police Force in Ogun State has arrested eight individuals over the alleged assault of police officers during an incident that occurred on Christmas Day in the Sango-Ota area of the state.
The suspects are accused of unlawful assembly, breach of public peace, obstruction of traffic, and attacking police officers while they were carrying out their official duties.
The Ogun State Police Command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued to journalists on Friday in Abeokuta. He explained that the action followed reports of disturbances at Temidire Junction and the Under-Bridge area of Sango-Ota.
According to Babaseyi, the suspects were members of a group operating under the name “Democratic Republic of the Yoruba.” The group allegedly barricaded major roads, lit bonfires, disrupted the free flow of traffic, and attacked police officers deployed to restore order.
“Upon receiving the report, police operatives swiftly mobilised to the affected locations, dispersed the group, and arrested all the suspects,” he said.
Babaseyi added that several items were recovered from the suspects, including a Toyota Dyna vehicle allegedly used to convey them, two sets of broadcast equipment, a carton containing flags and shirts bearing inscriptions linked to their agitation, as well as banners displaying their messages and manifesto.
He stated that the suspects would be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state. He warned that the police would not tolerate any actions capable of disrupting public peace and stressed that assaults on police officers would be met with firm and decisive action.
Ogunlowo also urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and to promptly report suspicious activities through the command’s emergency toll-free lines.
