An unidentified street sweeper was crushed to death by a commercial bus in a tragic accident along Meiran Road, Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Saturday, December 20, 2025, along the Meiran Road inward Iyana Ekoro axis. The bus driver reportedly attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by residents who witnessed the crash.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq.
According to the statement, the deceased was a female operative of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) who was carrying out routine environmental sanitation duties at the time of the accident.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the fatal incident involved a blue Ford bus laden with bottled and canned beverages, bearing registration number BDG 495 YH, which was recklessly and unlawfully reversing on the expressway,” the statement said.
“In the course of this grossly negligent manoeuvre, the vehicle rammed into the unsuspecting LAWMA sweeper who was engaged in routine roadside cleaning. The severe impact proved instantly fatal.”
Adebayo added that LASTMA officers on active traffic surveillance around the Meiran axis swiftly responded to a distress call.
“It was discovered that the driver had absconded from the crash site in a desperate attempt to evade accountability. Demonstrating exceptional alertness and professionalism, LASTMA officers pursued the fleeing vehicle, successfully apprehended the driver, and escorted both the suspect and the vehicle back to the scene,” he said.
The suspect and the bus were subsequently handed over to officers of the Meiran Police Division for further investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.
The prompt intervention of security personnel reportedly prevented a breakdown of law and order, as the driver was on the verge of being attacked by an angry mob.
The remains of the deceased were evacuated by LAWMA officials using an official vehicle for further necessary procedures.
Meanwhile, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic and avoidable loss, describing the incident as distressing and preventable. He urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly around sanitation workers and other road users.
