The Benue State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a woman, Miss Usange Janet, whose body was recovered from River Agbuu in Gwer East Local Government Area of the state.

Janet was reported missing on December 11, 2025, after leaving her residence for farm work in Mbabur community, where she lived with her elder sister and brother-in-law.

Following her failure to return home, search efforts led to the discovery of her slippers, a wheelbarrow, and farm tools at the farm site.

Her body was later found in the river on Sunday by a local resident, who alerted members of the community.

The incident has reportedly heightened tension in the area amid allegations surrounding the circumstances of her death. It was gathered that relatives of the deceased allegedly set ablaze a house belonging to a community member.

Community leaders and concerned residents have appealed to security agencies and the Gwer East Local Government authorities to intervene to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area said an investigation was ongoing.
