The Edo State Police Command has arrested Benin-based TikTok content creator, Osarobo Omoyemen — popularly known as Madam Oil Rice — for allegedly staging her own kidnap to boost her social media engagement.

The 24-year-old was arrested over the weekend and, according to Leadership, confessed during interrogation that the incident was entirely fabricated for online attention. Police spokesperson, CPS Moses Yamu, issued a statement warning the public against spreading false information capable of causing panic or undermining security efforts in the state.

According to the statement, Madam Oil Rice had posted a video claiming she was kidnapped along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City and later “rescued” by police officers who allegedly detained her at Akpata Police Station and collected ₦10,000 as bail.

The Command immediately launched an investigation. Police say the suspect admitted she staged the incident solely to generate content and attract more followers to her TikTok page. Investigators also found that she deleted an earlier video in which an accomplice in the background pleaded with viewers to follow her page, further exposing the motive behind the false alarm.

The police described her actions as misleading and capable of inciting hostility toward law enforcement and causing unnecessary tension in the state.

Omoyemen was subsequently charged to court on Thursday, November 20, 2025. Police say efforts are ongoing to track down her accomplices so they too can face prosecution.
