A new development has emerged in the ongoing calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, as 44 serving federal lawmakers from both northern and southern Nigeria have jointly written a two-page letter and resolution to President Bola Tinubu.
In the letter, the legislators urged the President to exercise his constitutional powers to order Kanu’s release from detention and to convene an all-inclusive political roundtable involving key stakeholders to address national challenges and pursue a lasting political solution.
Operating under the platform “Concerned Federal Lawmakers,” the lawmakers also appealed to President Tinubu to direct the Attorney General of the Federation to invoke his constitutional authority to discontinue Kanu’s prosecution.
Their intervention aligns with rising public sentiment and growing political demands for a political resolution to the prolonged detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader.

In their resolution, the lawmakers argued that halting the prosecution and opening constructive dialogue are essential for national reconciliation, reducing tensions in the Southeast, and achieving a durable and politically driven solution.
Part of the letter reads: “Dear Mr President, after a closed-door strategic meeting of federal lawmakers committed to promoting national unity and stability, and after extensive consultations across party lines and ethnic groups, we hereby write concerning Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Driven by the urgent need for national reconciliation and healing—as well as noting the Federal Government’s past engagements with militants and agitating groups across Nigeria, the insecurity that has affected the Southeast since 2015 and escalated since 2021, and various domestic court and international tribunal pronouncements in favour of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu—we request the following.”
They urged the President to direct the Attorney General to discontinue Kanu’s trial and initiate dialogue aimed at achieving a just political settlement.
The letter concludes with an expression of confidence in President Tinubu’s judgment and a plea for prompt consideration of their request.
