The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man, Muhammad Wanzam, for allegedly hacking a traveller, Alhaji Babuga Muhammad, to death in Bena, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, October 30, 2025. He said the incident occurred while the deceased was travelling from Bena town to his village, Karaye, in Bagega District, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to Abubakar, the attackers blocked the road and ambushed the victim near Malakachi village, before dragging him into a nearby forest, where they inflicted deep machete wounds on his neck.

“On October 16, 2025, at about 1800hrs, one Alhaji Babuga Muhammad, while on transit from Bena town, Danko/Wasagu LGA of Kebbi State, to his village, Karaye, Bagega District of Maru LGA of Zamfara State, was ambushed near Malakachi village by a gang of hoodlums who took him into the forest and macheted him on the neck,” the statement read.

The Divisional Police Officer in Bena, upon receiving the report, mobilised a team of officers to the scene. The victim was evacuated to the General Hospital, Bena, where he was confirmed dead by a medical practitioner.

“Consequently, one Muhammad Wanzam, male, aged 50, of Bena town, was reasonably suspected and arrested in connection with the case,” the statement added.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to conspiring with an accomplice identified as Nuhu Bena, who is currently on the run. Wanzam also admitted to using a cutlass to hack the deceased without any justifiable reason.

A search of his residence led to the recovery of a fabricated AK-47 rifle, one Dane gun, two live ammunition, one magazine, and the cutlass used in committing the crime.

The Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, commended the DPO and his team for their professionalism and intelligence-driven efforts in arresting the suspect. He directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Birnin Kebbi, for further investigation and to ensure the arrest of the fleeing accomplice.

The CP also advised residents to seek lawful means of resolving disputes rather than resorting to violence.

“CP Bello M. Sani reiterates the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Kebbi State. He appeals to residents to continue supporting police operations by promptly reporting suspicious movements to the nearest police station or other security agencies for swift action,” the statement concluded.
