Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested an ex-convict, Segun Kolawole, for robbery just five days after his release from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, said the 25-year-old suspect allegedly stole an Infinix Note 40 Pro smartphone and ₦200,000 cash from a trader in Opebi, Ikeja.
Kolawole was arrested around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Oshodi Market after RRS operatives became suspicious when they noticed he was carrying a large sum of money.
During interrogation, he failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the ₦80,000 found on him or the mobile phone in his possession.
“Subsequent investigation revealed that Kolawole had stolen the cash and mobile phone around 5:00 a.m. from a trader who was asleep near Peka, Opebi. The victim was later traced and confirmed the theft,” Abimbola stated.
Items recovered from the suspect include ₦80,000 cash, an Infinix Note 40 Pro smartphone, as well as newly bought clothes and shoes.
In a related development, RRS operatives also arrested two suspected pickpockets — Sodiq Isa (27) and Adekanmbi Ganiu (21) — for attempting to steal mobile phones from commuters at Ojota Bridge and Orile Roundabout, respectively, around 5:00 p.m. last Friday.
According to the police, both suspects confessed to the crimes during preliminary investigation.
“All three suspects have confessed to their involvement in the offences and will be charged to court upon completion of investigations,” the police spokesperson added.
