In a surprising move, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has dissolved the recently inaugurated Rivers State Pensions Board—just two weeks after it was established.

The board, which came into existence on September 12 under the leadership of former sole administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas, has now been declared defunct.

A statement released on Friday in Port Harcourt by the State Head of Service, Inyingi Brown, confirmed the development. According to the statement, the Office of the Accountant-General will temporarily take over all responsibilities previously handled by the board.

“The Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has approved the immediate dissolution of the Rivers State Pensions Board,” the statement read.

It further directed all former board members to hand over every asset and document belonging to the board to the Director of Administration.

“Consequently, the Office of the Accountant-General of Rivers State, henceforth, will handle the functions of the board,” it continued. “Members of the defunct board are by this notice advised to hand over all properties and assets of the board in their possession.”

No official reason has been given for the sudden dissolution. However, the Governor is expected to reconstitute a new board in due course.

This marks Governor Fubara’s first major administrative action since his reinstatement by President Bola Tinubu on September 17—an indication, according to political observers, of a broader restructuring effort underway in the state’s governance landscape.
