The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has made it clear that no amount of blackmail or public criticism will deter him from carrying out his responsibilities. Speaking during the flag-off of a road project in the Mabushi District of Abuja on Monday, September 22, Wike emphasized that his focus remains on fulfilling the mandate given to him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu — and ultimately, on pleasing God.

Addressing his critics, Wike accused some individuals of attempting to pressure him into taking actions that go against his principles. He maintained that such tactics would not work on him.

“If you like, go and organise yourselves, cry from morning till night, call me names, put whatever you want on the internet — it doesn’t matter,” Wike said. “I’m not the kind of person that blackmail can change. My skin is thick. As a politician, you expect these things — so why should I be worried?”

He continued by pointing out that criticism is part of political life and shouldn’t be taken personally.

“Any seasoned politician knows people will always talk. If you can’t handle that, then you should step aside and go rest.”

The minister further stated that the only opinion that holds weight for him is that of President Tinubu, who appointed him.

“The only time I’ll be concerned is if my appointor is not satisfied with my performance. That’s when I’ll worry. But just because we’re not doing what some people want, and they think blackmail will force our hand — it won’t happen.”

Wike also sent a message to civil servants allegedly involved in campaigns to undermine his administration.

“If you’re one of those mobilising people to cause trouble, call them back. Tell them it’s not going to work. I know it won’t.”

With this latest statement, Wike has once again underlined his no-nonsense approach to governance in the FCT — setting a clear tone for how he intends to carry out his duties amid rising political pressure.
