The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed cybercrime charges against political activist Omoyele Sowore and two others for allegedly posting false information about President Bola Tinubu, aimed at causing a breakdown of law and order in Nigeria.
The charges were filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja and name X Incorporation (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook) as co-defendants.
Sowore, known as the convener of the RevolutionNow protest, faces a five-count charge. The DSS alleges that on August 25, he used his official X account to tweet a message accusing President Tinubu of lying about corruption under his regime during a visit to Brazil.
The following day, August 26, Sowore reportedly shared the same message on his official Facebook page, allegedly intending to create unrest and deepen divisions among Nigerians with differing views about the president.
The charges also accuse Sowore of publishing defamatory material against President Tinubu on both platforms, which the DSS says violates Section 375 of the Criminal Code.
In the final count, Sowore is accused of publishing false information intended to incite public fear and disturbance, further damaging the president’s reputation.
The DSS filed the charges on behalf of the federal government and is pursuing legal action to hold Sowore accountable for the alleged offenses.
