Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has released the findings of its investigation into the death of Miss Isabella Chioma Ajana, a 100-level Law student who passed away on July 9, 2025.

Ajana reportedly died three days after being rushed to the university’s medical centre due to complications from her diabetic condition.

Her roommates at Elmada Hostel alleged that they had lost their room key and sought a spare from the hostel mistress. However, the mistress allegedly demanded ₦120,000 for a replacement key—₦40,000 each from the three roommates. Despite pleas that Ajana urgently needed access to her insulin medication, they claimed the mistress refused to help, leading to a deterioration in Ajana’s health and her eventual death at the medical centre.

In a statement released on Friday, August 22, UNIZIK announced that medical personnel involved in Ajana’s treatment have been suspended for three months pending the conclusion of investigations.

Regarding the hostel mistress, the university clarified that Elmada Hostel is privately managed but jointly owned. It urged the hostel’s management to dismiss her immediately and stated that it would review its partnership with the facility.
