Police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo said the incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. The officers, attached to the Trio Task Team, had collected the suspect for an appearance at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court over a 2023 business robbery case.
“After the court proceedings, the detectives were intercepted and fatally shot while returning the suspect to police custody,” Masondo said. “Their firearms were taken, and the suspect was later seen driving the unmarked police vehicle, which was found abandoned a few kilometres from the scene.”
Masondo added that a manhunt has been launched for the suspect.
