The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has publicly disowned a viral document circulating online that lists 151 secondary schools allegedly affected by withheld results in the 2025 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The controversy arose shortly after WAEC’s official announcement on Monday, August 4, revealing that the results of 192,089 candidates — about 9.75% of total candidates — were withheld due to suspected involvement in examination malpractice.

However, a letter dated the same day began making the rounds online. Titled “Urgent Notice to the Following Secondary Schools Regarding Withheld Results,” the document bore the name and signature of one “Dr. Florence Ajayi,” supposedly the Director of Examination Malpractice and Irregularities at WAEC Nigeria.

The letter claimed that students from the listed schools had their results withheld due to malpractice. It instructed principals of the named institutions to appear at WAEC’s Lagos Zonal Office within 10 working days, with exam scripts and supporting documentation in hand.

Some well-known schools mentioned in the viral list included:

  • Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu
  • Atlantic Hall, Epe
  • Corona Secondary School, Agbara
  • Christ the King College, Onitsha
  • St. Louis Secondary School, Ondo
  • Charles Dale Memorial International School, Port Harcourt
  • Stella Maris College, Abuja
  • Federal Government Girls’ College, Calabar
  • And several others.

But on Tuesday, August 5, WAEC took to its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @waecnigeria, to set the record straight.

“Kindly ignore any message listing schools whose results were supposedly cancelled. Meanwhile, WAEC will never ask any centre to bring scripts of candidates to the office. Where would they get them from?

Do not accept any message that is not on our handles and accredited media,” the council stated.

WAEC emphasized that the viral letter is fake, warning school authorities, students, and parents not to fall for misinformation from unofficial sources.

Meanwhile, WAEC’s official result announcement also revealed a significant drop in performance this year. According to Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC’s National Office, only 38.32% of the 1,969,313 candidates secured credits and above in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics ,a sharp decline from the 72.12% recorded in 2024.

Dr. Dangut attributed the drop to stricter anti-malpractice measures implemented during the 2025 examination cycle.

As investigations into withheld results continue, WAEC has urged the public to rely only on verified updates from the council’s official platforms.
