Tragedy struck on Sunday, August 3, as two police officers assigned to Kingsley Ikoro, the Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, were killed in a deadly ambush by unknown gunmen in Okigwe, Imo State.
According to reports from Vanguard, the incident happened while the officers were traveling with the lawmaker’s convoy. One of the vehicles in the convoy experienced a mechanical failure, forcing the two policemen to stay behind while the rest of the group moved on.
It was during this delay that the gunmen struck, fatally shooting the officers. Okigwe is known to be a hotspot for violent attacks, which has heightened concerns about security in the region.
Reacting to the attack, Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, assured the public that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
“There is no hiding place for those behind this heinous crime,” Okoye stated on Monday.
“The bodies of the officers, who paid the supreme price in the line of duty, have been evacuated to the morgue. A thorough investigation is underway.”
He also confirmed that tactical police units have begun combing nearby bushes and forests in search of the attackers, promising that those responsible will face the full weight of the law.
