Minister of Works, David Umahi, has said that the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), should not be viewed as a prerequisite for the South-East region to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Friday, Umahi emphasized that President Tinubu is not responsible for Kanu’s continued detention. He stressed that any efforts to secure Kanu’s release must be rooted in constructive dialogue rather than political pressure or ultimatums.

“Someone asked me about Nnamdi Kanu, and I made it clear his case should not be a condition for the South-East to back the president,” Umahi said. “We are open to negotiating his release, but let’s not forget—President Tinubu didn’t put him there.”

Kanu has been in detention since June 2020 following his extradition from Kenya. He is currently facing trial on a seven-count charge related to treasonable felony, filed by the federal government. Over the years, various groups and individuals have called for his release, citing human rights concerns and the broader goal of national unity.

Umahi called for responsible advocacy, stating that appeals for Kanu’s release should be handled with maturity and focus on dialogue. “President Tinubu may not be perfect, but he is making the right moves. He inherited a troubled economy, yet he’s gaining the confidence of the international community, which is now backing our infrastructure projects.”

Addressing claims that the South-East is being sidelined in federal appointments and infrastructure development, Umahi dismissed such criticisms as baseless. “Those who accuse the president should show what they’ve contributed to the nation. This administration is inclusive and focused on progress.
