Gunmen have killed Zaki Stephen Kegher, the traditional ruler of Mbainiange in Mbayongo District, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attack occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, when the assailants stormed Kegher’s residence during a meeting over a land dispute and fatally shot him. The 62-year-old monarch, who served as the kindred head of the Odbaniange community, was reportedly the primary target of the gunmen.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed that preliminary intelligence suggests the attackers may be loyalists of a notorious bandit leader identified as Konyo.

Following a distress call, security operatives were quickly deployed to the scene. However, the perpetrators had already escaped into a nearby forest before the team’s arrival.

According to police sources, a combined team of security forces is currently combing the surrounding bushes in an ongoing effort to locate and apprehend the suspects.
