Senator Shehu Sani has called on opposition parties—including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and others—to resolve their internal conflicts rather than blaming President Bola Tinubu for their leadership struggles.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Sani criticized the opposition for expecting the president to intervene in their affairs.

“It is unfortunate that the opposition in this country is looking to the president to solve their problems,” Sani said. “How logical is it that you have a problem in your own house, yet blame your neighbor or adversary instead of addressing it yourself?”

He added, “If there’s a problem in the PDP, it’s the PDP’s responsibility to solve it. The same goes for the Labour Party, SDP, and NNPP. I don’t understand if they now expect the president to join their parties just to resolve their crises.”

Sani further criticized party leaders who fail to act against internal saboteurs but instead focus blame on President Tinubu.

“If you’re in the PDP and people within your party are working against it, yet you refuse to suspend or expel them and instead blame the president, that’s simply irresponsible,” he said. “If the SDP has a crisis and chooses to scapegoat the president, it shows a lack of seriousness.”

According to Sani, it is politically unrealistic to expect the president to help fix opposition parties, as it is not in his interest to strengthen his political adversaries.

“As a president from a ruling party, he can’t be expected to repair the weapons his rivals would use against him,” Sani explained. “It’s part of political strategy to let your adversaries be consumed by their own internal issues.”

His comments come amid ongoing leadership crises in many opposition parties, several of which have accused President Tinubu of fueling their internal problems.

During his June 12 Democracy Day address, President Tinubu also took a swipe at the opposition, likening them to “sinking ships” and stating that he had no intention of helping them resolve their issues.

“Political parties fearful of members leaving may be better served by examining their internal processes and affairs rather than fearfully conjuring up demons that do not exist,” Tinubu said. “I will not tell you to put your house in order—nor will I help you to do so. It is indeed a pleasure to witness you in such disarray.”
