The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security advisory urging American citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to Nigerian military and government facilities amid rising global security concerns.
In a statement released on Monday, June 23, the US Embassy announced a restriction preventing its employees and their families from visiting military sites or other government venues in Abuja unless it is for official business.
This advisory follows recent global developments that have led to increased security measures and a reassessment of movement around sensitive areas.
American citizens living in or visiting Nigeria are advised to stay vigilant, especially in public spaces commonly frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials.
The embassy also recommends avoiding large gatherings, maintaining unpredictable routines, and becoming familiar with emergency exits when entering buildings.
US nationals are encouraged to review their personal security plans and exercise heightened caution during their time in Nigeria.
The statement emphasized:
“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to Nigerian military sites or other government venues in Abuja at this time. Actions to take: Stay alert in public places, particularly in locations frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials. Avoid large gatherings and unnecessary travel. Avoid predictable routines. Familiarize yourself with emergency exits and review your personal security plans.”
Despite these new restrictions, the Consular Sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain fully operational and available to assist US citizens.
