As tensions in the Middle East escalate, world powers are voicing sharply divided responses to the United States’ recent airstrikes on Iran. The military action, carried out on Sunday, June 22, has further complicated an already volatile regional landscape.
Under orders from President Donald Trump, U.S. warplanes targeted three of Iran’s nuclear facilities—Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. The strikes represent a dramatic escalation in Washington’s involvement in the region and have triggered a wave of diplomatic responses from global leaders.
UK Stands with the US, Urges Diplomacy
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the U.S. operation, labeling Iran’s nuclear ambitions as “a grave threat to international security.” He emphasized the need for renewed diplomacy and called on Tehran to return to the negotiating table.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy reinforced this message, urging Iran “to show restraint” and engage in peaceful dialogue.
The European Union echoed the UK’s concerns. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed the need for diplomacy and international law: “Stability must be the priority. Now is the moment for Iran to engage in a credible diplomatic solution. The negotiating table is the only place to end this crisis.”
Japan also joined calls for de-escalation. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba urged a peaceful resolution while underscoring the need to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons program. “A de-escalation as soon as possible is more important than anything,” he said, “but at the same time, Iran’s nuclear weapons development must be stopped.”
China and Russia Condemn US Action
In sharp contrast, China and Russia strongly criticized the U.S. strikes. China’s foreign ministry condemned the attacks as “a serious violation” of the UN Charter and international law, warning that such actions risk deepening instability across the region. Beijing called for a ceasefire, particularly involving Israel, and pushed for renewed dialogue.
Russia echoed China’s position, calling the strikes “irresponsible” and “a flagrant violation of international law.” The Russian foreign ministry demanded an immediate halt to hostilities and urged all parties to recommit to diplomacy.
A Divided International Community
The strikes come in the wake of escalating tit-for-tat attacks between Iran and Israel. Tehran had previously warned that U.S. involvement would have lasting consequences. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community remains starkly divided—some backing military deterrence, others warning it will only fan the flames of conflict.
