Anambra School Triumphs Over UK Rivals to Win Inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Competition

A Nigerian secondary school, St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, has emerged as the grand champion of the inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Competition, outshining both local and British rivals.

The virtual event took place on June 19, 2025, and featured top-tier schools from across Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Representing Nigeria were Britarch Schools, Abuja; Sure Start School, Abuja; St. Augustine’s College, Jos; and St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu. From the UK, participating schools included Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.

After navigating a series of intense preliminary rounds, St. John Vianney Science College advanced to the final stages of the competition. The team triumphed over UK opponents Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School before facing fellow Nigerian contender St. Augustine’s College, Jos, in the finals.

In a spirited and closely contested final round, St. John Vianney Science College delivered a commanding performance to claim the championship title—cementing its place as the first-ever winner of the UK-Nigeria Debate Competition.
