Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe has been hospitalised during the Club World Cup, putting his participation in the tournament in serious doubt.
Mbappe was absent from Real Madrid’s opening match on Wednesday due to illness. On Thursday, the club confirmed that the French forward has been admitted to hospital with a severe case of gastroenteritis—a condition marked by diarrhoea and vomiting.
In an official statement, the club announced:
“Our player Kylian Mbappe is suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis and has been admitted to hospital in order to undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment.”
Following their 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal, Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso addressed concerns about Mbappe’s condition.
“We’ll have to see how he feels,” Alonso said.
“He experienced significant viral symptoms recently, so we’ll assess his condition closer to the game.”
Real Madrid are set to face Mexican side Pachuca in their second group-stage match on Sunday, with Alonso hoping for both a stronger performance and positive news regarding Mbappe’s recovery.
Los Blancos will wrap up their group stage campaign against Red Bull Salzburg on June 26.
