The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a 17-year-old boy, identified as Malik, for allegedly stabbing his father’s mistress, Mrs. Falilat Yusuf, to death in the Gaa Akanbi area of Ilorin.
The tragic incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2025, in the Danialu community, sparking panic among residents.
The victim, popularly known in the neighborhood as Iya Ganiyat, was reportedly stabbed multiple times in the neck and found lying in a pool of blood inside her residence.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the state police command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, told Daily Trust on Tuesday, June 17, that the suspect was apprehended following a swift response by officers. She noted that the intervention prevented an attempted mob lynching by angry locals who caught Malik as he tried to flee the scene.
“The suspect is currently in our custody, and an investigation is underway,” she said.
According to eyewitness accounts, Malik had previously been banned from visiting the compound due to accusations of theft and prior conflicts with the deceased. Witnesses claim he had been living in a separate apartment before the incident.
Teslim, the victim’s son, who discovered his mother’s lifeless body, recounted the chilling scene.
“I saw Malik near our house making strange hand signs. When I confronted him, he ran off. But when I went inside, I found my mother lying in a pool of blood. It was horrifying,” he said.
He added that the suspect returned to the scene after changing clothes but was still wearing bloodstained shoes. This raised suspicion among neighbors, who quickly restrained him and handed him over to the authorities.
Residents at the scene claimed that Malik made confessional statements to the police, admitting to having unresolved issues with the deceased, though the exact nature of their dispute remains unclear.
Mrs. Falilat Yusuf was buried in Ilorin over the weekend according to Islamic rites. Her death has left the community in mourning, with many describing her as peaceful, kind-hearted, and hardworking.
