The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday, June 16, visited Benue State to conduct an on-the-ground assessment of the escalating security crisis following a string of deadly attacks that have claimed dozens of lives and displaced hundreds.

The IGP’s visit comes in the aftermath of a violent assault on Yelwata community last Friday, where suspected herdsmen reportedly killed several residents and left many others injured.

This attack is the latest in a troubling wave of violence that has swept across the state in recent weeks. Benue, a major agricultural hub in North Central Nigeria, has for years been the epicenter of recurring clashes, often linked to conflicts between farming communities and nomadic herders.

Egbetokun’s arrival follows a renewed directive from President Bola Tinubu, who on Sunday tasked security chiefs with taking urgent and decisive action to restore peace in the state.

“The latest news of wanton killings in Benue State is very depressing. We must not allow this bloodletting to continue unabated. Enough is now enough. I have directed the security agencies to act decisively, arrest the perpetrators of these evil acts on all sides of the conflict, and ensure they are prosecuted,” the President said in a statement.
