Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s remarks regarding the internal turmoil within Nigeria’s opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking during the Democracy Day commemoration at the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 12, President Tinubu commented on the divisions in the opposition, saying it was “a pleasure” to see the parties “in disarray.” He added that he had no intention of helping them resolve their issues: “I will not help you to do so, either.”

Tinubu also rejected claims that his administration was pushing for a one-party state amid continued defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In his response, Saraki acknowledged the PDP’s internal challenges but emphasized the responsibility of opposition members to rebuild. Speaking to journalists after the Democracy Day ceremony, he said:

“I think we must take him at his word. He spoke well, saying he’s not for a one-party state. So we must believe that he supports a multi-party democracy, and on that, we are all on the same page.”

Saraki added that the opposition must now focus on internal reforms:

“That’s why we’re going around and bringing everyone together. For those who feel they’re under pressure—there’s no pressure anymore. We’re all for a multi-party system. As he said, he won’t help us, so we’ll sort our own house out.”
